Stables Assistant

Wilson College is seeking a full-time Stables Assistant.  The general purpose of the position is to provide care of up to 72 Wilson and privately owned horses and maintenance of the Equestrian Center in a manner consistent with an upper level professional equine facility.  Details of the position are as follows:

Job responsibilities: Handle beginner and intermediate level horses safely and appropriately. Organize turn-arounds, provide correct hay, grain and supplements for horses, recognize possible illness and identify lameness/injuries and report immediately, groom, bathe, pick feet, tack/untack horses, and apply/adjust basic equine clothing and equipment safely and correctly. Act in a professional manner at all times. Assist with handling for veterinarian and farrier for well-mannered horses when needed. Perform basic equine first aid, learn correct and accurate oral and eye medication administration, apply standing bandages safely and correctly, take equine vitals accurately, and equine triage. Insure stalls, paddocks, facility and grounds are clean and well maintained including performing the cleaning and maintenance when needed. Operate tractor and dump trailers safely and correctly even in adverse weather conditions. Maintain confidentiality with equine records. Perform basic administrative and paperwork duties related to maintaining equine records. Assisting with camps and horse shows will be included in this position.

Requirements for position: Bachelor’s degree in Equine Studies, Animal Studies, Agriculture, or related field is preferred, but not required. Employee must have reliable transportation to and from work.  Employee must complete all required background checks with acceptable results in accordance with PA ACT 153 and Wilson College requirements. Employee must have an acceptable driving record to operate college owned vehicles and complete a driving record clearance. Employee must be available weekends and holidays as well as weekdays. Evening shifts may be required.

Experience needed: Employee must have a minimum of one year professional experience working with horses at 25 hours or more per week. Employee must possess good equine handling skills and possess understanding of basic equine care and first aid. A good attitude and willingness to learn and work hard is required.

Equipment used in this position includes but is not limited to: Gas powered leaf blower, equine related equipment, tractors, gas powered weed trimmers, bumper hitch dump trailers, operation of College owned vehicles, and basic maintenance equipment.
