Farm Manager

The Fulton Center for Sustainability Studies  at Wilson College seeks a full-time Farm Manager to oversee the daily operations of the Fulton Farm, Wilson College’s 7 acre certified organic college farm.  Reporting to the Director of the Fulton Center, the Farm Manager will plan, develop and manage all aspects of vegetable, fruit and herb production including planning and scheduling, managing farm labor, and direct sales in accordance with sustainable agriculture practices. Produce is marketed through a community-supported agriculture initiative, farmers’ markets and direct sales.

The Farm Manager will also oversee the campus compost program, facilitate student research initiatives and may participate in educational opportunities for the campus and community where appropriate. Master’s degree in agriculture or related field is preferred, teaching experience and familiarity with small business management is a plus.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage Fulton Farm vegetable production systems in accordance with organic standards
  • Market wholesale and retail farm produce
  • Maintain and utilize all farm equipment properly
  • Manage paid and volunteer farm workers
  • Train and mentor farm apprentices and college interns
  • Serve the 120 paid members of the CSA program
  • Operate the farm within budget
  • Perform related duties as required

Qualifications

  • College degree in agricultural related field, Master’s degree preferred
  • 3-5 years of experience with small-scale organic farming, including farm equipment operation and maintenance, and  management of small work crews
  • Knowledge of best practices in organic farming
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work well in an institutional setting with students, faculty, colleagues and the general public
